The original design for the Pink Floyd shirt was created by Storm Thorgerson, who also designed many other iconic shirts for bands such as Led Zeppelin and The Who. The shirt was meant to be a homage to Syd Barrett's previous band, The Echoes. The shirt features a psychedelic design inspired by Indian classical artistry and features an image of Barrett wearing a conical hat and crooked grin.

The shirt originally debuted at the band's performance at London's Roundhouse on 3rd July 1965. However, due to copyright issues with the album cover for their debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, the clothing company that printed the shirts refused to print them with the album cover art. In response, manager Peter Jenner commissioned graphic designer Roger Waters to create an alternative design featuring images from the album cover.

This design became known as the "Floyd logo" and remains in use to this day.The shirt became a part of The Floyd's stage wardrobe for the rest of their career, famously appearing in the band's performance at Live Aid on 13th July 1985.This variant was made available to buy from the official Floyd website on 6th October 2016 as part of the band's 40th anniversary celebrations.
